Laptop Engraving: Sacred Heart

Saturday's Daily Draw of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has been converted into this design for the laser engraver, and today I engraved it into my 12 year old IBM Thinkpad T22, just for fun.

The lid of the laptop is made of cast ABS and then painted black, and you can see the strange shiny patches in the ABS where the laser has removed the paint. It's a very cool effect, and looks very shimmery in person.

This engraving is roughly 6 inches square, and took 19 minutes at 500 DPI to engrave.

    1. Well, I know the limits of the machine. The worst case scenario with this (or any other laptop) would be the laser would go too deeply and damage things. Thankfully I can just set the power really low, do a pass, and see what comes of it. From there I can dial up the power to make it go just deep enough. It sounds more risky than it actually is, and that's because I'm becoming quite comfortable with the operation of the machine.

  2. You know.... part of me says that this could really be a winner with companies or schools ... who could have unique designs for their employees'/students' laptops. Maybe even with clubs, fraternities, etc.

However, you'd probably have to have some kind of accidental loss insurance on them....

  3. My laptop has removable covers on top so it would be easier to engrave without harming the laptop

    1. I imagine that would be pretty nice. The shell on mine is technically removable, but you have to take an awful lot of stuff apart to get to that point.
